Newcomer brings mental health bridge

The Durango Herald - 10/17/2017

When my ballot comes in the mail this month, I will vote with confidence for Emily Newcomer for the Durango 9-R school board and encourage others to do the same.

Emily will serve as a solid and steady bridge between our school district and the mental health community and bring administrative expertise and experience as well. She is a licensed professional counselor and therapist with a master's in educational psychology. Her focus is with adolescents and adults dealing with trauma and issues that prevent healthy living.

The student suicide epidemic is a heightened, district-wide area of concern. Emily is currently engaged in the community-led suicide prevention efforts.

During her past leadership as Community Education coordinator for Durango's Sexual Assault Services Organization, she has educated K-12 students with awareness and ways to access help. Administrative school board qualifications continue with her degree in commerce management and years spent as an Outward Bound instructor and course director for teen challenge programs.

Emily's professional sensitivity and focus on the whole child ? mental, emotional and physical ? will bring a keen awareness of needs for all students, especially the culturally diverse, disenfranchised and oppressed.

Please join me in voting for Emily Newcomer ? a vote for that much-needed mental health bridge.
