Mental health crisis prompts Duluth police response; area reopened to traffic

Apr. 20—DULUTH — Duluth, Hermantown and Superior police departments responded late Wednesday morning to an individual experiencing a mental health crisis on the 700 block of East 12th Street in the East Hillside neighborhood.

According to city spokesperson Kate Van Daele, the situation began just after 11 a.m. when Hermantown officers responded to a welfare check in Hermantown.

Shortly after noon, Duluth officers then responded to a call about a man experiencing a mental health crisis on the 700 block of East 12th Street. Officers had information that led them to believe the individual had a weapon, which prompted them to call for assistance from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and Superior Police Department. The block was cordoned off for a few hours while the situation continued.

As of 4 p.m., there is no longer a threat to public safety and the affected area was opened to traffic at 4:30 p.m.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
