Madison County veterans aim to help refugee family

Richmond Register - 4/2/2022

Apr. 2—Several organizations in Madison County are doing their part to help a family traveling to Richmond to escape the war-torn country of Ukraine.

The Madison County Veterans Committee is ramping up efforts to gather furniture, clothing, and monetary donations for a family in need which are fleeing the war-torn country.

According to Boyd, the refugee family includes a Madison County native who is also a veteran.

The veteran is trying to move his wife and teenage son back to Richmond where they once resided, organizers said.

Boyd said time is of the essence since the committee does not know exactly when the family will be back in the area.

"All we currently know is as of about a week ago, they have made it to Poland waiting on a flight home," Boyd said. "They are leaving with nothing but a suitcase maybe."

He said right now is the time to prepare and get as much ready as possible.

"One of the things we do is help people, and with him being a veteran, it holds a different light and we are just trying to help fellow Americans get out of a war-torn area," Boyd said.

Any monetary assistance is also appreciated. Any donations can be made out to Madison County Veterans Committee, 1215 W. Main St, Richmond KY 40475; Reference Ukraine Refugee Assistance.

Things can be dropped off at 1215 W Main St, Richmond KY Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
